Donations sought for Cops-N-Kids

Children selected by school system

POSTED: December 1, 2013 12:26 a.m.

The local Fraternal Order of Police is collecting donations for its annual Christmas shopping event with children in need.

The Sgt. D.P. Land Memorial Lodge No. 82 will take kids to the Walmart on Market Place Boulevard on Dec. 10 for the Cops-N-Kids holiday event.

Chris Shelton, president of the lodge, said 107 children were able to “shop with a cop” last year.

“We are hoping to be able to sponsor even more this year,” Shelton said. “For every $125 we collect, we will be able to sponsor another child.”

The children are selected through the local school system, with help coming from the school counselors.

Kids and their parents shop with a law enforcement officer or representative for the holiday event.

“You would think in shopping with these children that they would be picking out toys,” Shelton said. “Many times we see the children selecting clothes, shoes and sometimes food.”

Donations can be sent to the Sgt. D.P. Land Memorial Lodge No. 82, Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), P.O. Box 1374, Cumming, GA 30028.
