Forsyth Youth Orchestra holding concert

Holiday-themed event celebrates the season

POSTED: December 2, 2013 12:28 a.m.

Young musicians will kick off the holiday season with a concert Wednesday.

The Forsyth Youth Orchestra, or FYO, will present “Holiday Celebrations” at 8 p.m. in the Cumming Regional Readiness Center, 100 Aquatic Circle.

The orchestra, which formed earlier this year, gives students who play instruments such as violin, viola, cello and bass a chance to hone their skills in a group performance setting since most public school band programs don’t include stringed instruments.

Corina Brito, a local violin instructor, started the group in May after watching her students be forced to drive to Atlanta or other farther locations to have the opportunity to perform in a group setting.

"When my students reach the level of playing in an orchestra, they have to go all the way into [another] town," she said at the time.

"Sometimes it's Atlanta, sometimes Kennesaw, but it's all very far for parents to have to drive during the week. So there's always been a need for this kind of program here."

Since its beginnings the group has continued to grow and has presented several concerts for the community.

“Wednesday’s concert will give FYO students the chance to demonstrate, through music, the main holidays celebrated in our community,” Brito said.

“The concert starts with FYO Quartet playing a series of jazzy arrangements of Christmas tunes.”

She said the concert would continue with the full group performing “a beautiful Mozart arrangement of ‘Ave Verum Corpus.’”

Other selections will include pieces by J.S. Bach and songs that celebrate Hanukkah and Kwanzaa.

“Two selections from ‘The Nutcracker’ ballet will be presented and the concert will close with the always enjoyable ‘Charlie Brown Christmas,’” Brito said.

Tickets to the concert are $15 and can be purchased in advance by calling (770) 781-9178 or online at www.playhousecumming.com. Tickets will also be available at the door.
