Lesley Schneider has lived in Forsyth for about three years. A transplant from New Orleans, the senior citizen knew only her family when she first moved to the county.

“The senior center has been a godsend,” she said. “Until I found the senior center, I didn’t have any friends.”

Schneider visits about five times a week and also does volunteer work for the center’s Sunshine Room, focusing on seniors with Alzheimer’s Disease.

So an event such as Monday’s senior luncheon at Tam’s Backstage restaurant gave Schneider another thing to be thankful for.

“This is a highlight for us this time of year,” she said while enjoying the Christmas meal with friends. “I think it’s just a wonderful Christmas gathering where friends come together.”

Diane Bowling, who spends about three days a week at the senior center, thought the lunch was “terrific.”

“Just being with our friends and having a good time with everybody, this was great,” she said.

Kerry Rosewall, senior center activities team leader, said the seniors “so look forward to this event.”

“They love it,” said Rosewall, who has attended the lunch since it began. “This means so much to them.”

In addition to feeding seniors at the Cumming eatery, Tam’s also packaged lunch boxes for Sunshine Room seniors, who weren’t able to make it.

“They get to participate even though they’re not here,” Rosewall said.

Monday’s event will be followed by the Helpings of Hope meal tonight, when Tam’s welcomes those being helped by nonprofits such as Abba House, Bald Ridge Boys Lodge, Jesse’s House, Faith’s House and the Place of Forsyth County.
