Process for homestead exemptions reviewed

The Forsyth County Board of Tax Assessors is in the process of formalizing a new policy for homestead exemption applications.

Since the completion of a homestead audit, the office has been requiring that the address on a driver’s license match the property for which someone is applying for an exemption to prove residency.

The tax assessor's office worked with Tax Management Associates to find residents who may be claiming two homesteads, when just one is allowed.

Tax Assessor Mary Kirkpatrick said the state recommended having a written policy to match the practice.

Board members reviewed a draft of the policy on Thursday and, though they agreed with the concept, made some suggestions. A vote on the final copy of plan is expected at their January meeting.

Charles Meagher added a provision that people who don’t have a driver’s license can supply a Georgia identification card.

If the license has a post office box address on it, the policy would require voter registration or vehicle registration at the property, or a notarized affidavit of residency.

The affidavit would have homeowners testify that the property is their primary residence and no other house owned by that person or a spouse gets a homestead exemption.
