4 injured in wrong-way crash

Authorities: Driver went west on Hwy. 20 east

POSTED: January 4, 2014 12:30 a.m.

At least four people, including a small child, were taken to area hospitals Thursday night following a head-on collision that authorities said involved a wrong-way driver on Hwy. 20.

The two-vehicle wreck happened about 10:45 p.m. between James Burgess Road and Windermere Parkway, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, and shut down the busy corridor east of Cumming for more than an hour.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Karleen Chalker said a Kia Sportage traveling west on the eastbound side of Hwy. 20 struck an oncoming Ford F250 pickup.

The driver of the Kia, a 52-year-old Lawrenceville woman, was traveling alone, according to Chalker. She was taken to North Fulton Hospital with what was described as a severely broken ankle.

The 26-year-old Dahlonega man who was driving the pickup did not require hospitalization, Chalker said. However, all three passengers in the truck needed medical attention.

According to Chalker, they included a 23-year-old woman and 22-year-old man, who were also both taken to North Fulton, as well as a 9-month-old child.

“There were really no visible injuries, but they wanted to have the child evaluated due to the severity of the accident,” Chalker said.

The child was taken by ambulance to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite.

“Due to the weather [Thursday] night, with the high winds, life flight could not get off the ground to transport, so everybody was transported by ground,” Chalker said.

No charges were immediately filed in connection with the wreck, which remains under investigation. The highway reopened about midnight.
