No decision yet on school for Wednesday

Frigid conditions lingering

POSTED: January 7, 2014 4:00 p.m.

As of Tuesday afternoon, school is still scheduled to resume Wednesday for students and staff in the Forsyth County school system.

Officials were monitoring the weather conditions and advised that the situation could change overnight or Wednesday morning.

According to Jennifer Caracciolo, spokeswoman for the system, there are many factors to consider.

“As many are experiencing in their homes and businesses, we have situations occurring with our HV/AC and sprinklers at some of our school facilities,” she said.

“Also, we have a number of problems reported by our drivers concerning our buses. We expect more of these situations to happen as the day progresses.”

She went on to note that staff members were “working as quickly as possible to address these situations so we can have school.”

The decision was made Monday morning to cancel school Tuesday, what would have been the first day of classes after the holiday break. All activities and athletics before and after school also were scrapped.

In making the announcement Monday morning, Caracciolo apologized for any inconveniences the closing may have caused families, but noted that the district is “simply not as prepared for these weather conditions as schools in the northern United States may be.”

She also noted that some students may not have had warm enough clothing for the conditions, especially those who walk to school or wait at bus stops.

The temperature Tuesday morning was 4 degrees Fahrenheit, the coldest since at least 2001.

Students will make up the missed day on March 17, a Monday, which is listed on the district’s calendar as an inclement weather makeup day.

“Our goal is to notify you of any changes to school schedules as early as possible so families can make arrangements,” Caracciolo said.
