Planning board down to three

Second member in two months resigns

POSTED: January 15, 2014 12:30 a.m.

Forsyth County’s planning board has another vacancy.

District 3 representative Craig Nolen resigned from the panel Monday, stating he no longer has the time to devote to the position.

“I’m back out starting my career over, and I feel like I just don’t have the time to do the job on planning commission that I need to do,” Nolen said. “I see myself going in too many different directions.”

He plans to re-enter his former job as a home builder, which he did for 22 years until the market collapsed.

The planning board, a five-member panel, makes recommendations to the Forsyth County commission on rezonings and other issues. Each commissioner appoints a representative.

Nolen is the second board member in two months to leave his post, following the December resignation of Joe Moses, a retired dentist who represented District 5.

A nominee to fill the remainder of Moses’ term likely will be named Thursday during a meeting of the county commission.

District 3 Commissioner Todd Levent said he hopes to fill Nolen’s term within the next 30 days.

Levent said Nolen “respectfully stepped down” since he will no longer have enough time to devote to the planning board with his new job.

The two have also ended their business partnership, leaving Levent as the sole owner of Midway Warehouse.

Nolen said they did have a “misunderstanding” that has since been resolved. He added that his decisions to step down from the planning board and to return to his former career are unrelated to the business matter.

Levent said he has some residents he’s considering to finish out Nolen’s term.

“I’m looking for someone who cares about homeowners and not special interests,” he said.
