Reminder: No school Monday

POSTED: January 19, 2014 12:27 a.m.

Forsyth County teachers and students will get a break Monday as schools will be closed in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The holiday comes just two weeks after winter break finished up on Jan. 3.

Teachers were originally scheduled to return to work Jan. 6 for a professional development day. However, both they and students ended up not returning until Jan. 8 due to an arctic blast that pushed temperatures to a record-low 4 degrees.

Jennifer Caracciolo, district spokeswoman, said at the time of the closings that officials knew many students were not prepared to walk to school or wait at the bus stop in conditions that cold.

“We also knew too that we’d have problems with our facilities because of the low, record-breaking weather,” she said.

After they return Tuesday following the holiday, students won’t have another day off until Feb. 14, which is a professional development day for teachers. But staff and students will enjoy a break on the following Monday, Feb. 17.

The next long vacation for students and school staff will be spring break, which runs from March 31-April 4.
