New cancer treatment options offered at hospital

POSTED: January 30, 2014 12:04 a.m.

Cancer patients can take advantage of new treatment options through Northside Hospital-Forsyth.

In 2012, Georgia Cancer Specialists affiliated with the Northside Hospital Cancer Institute.

Through this affiliation, its nearly 50 physicians provide care in 27 Northside Hospital Cancer Institute locations across metro Atlanta and north and central Georgia.

The additions of clinical trials at the GCS clinic in Cumming increase local patients’ access to novel cancer treatments.

Through the trials, patients can take part in treatments that have not yet been fully approved by the Federal Drug Administration and are therefore not available to the general population.

Jorge Leguizamo and Nishan Fernando are the designated clinical investigators for the research program at the Cumming clinic.

The physicians said the community is fortunate to have such opportunities.

“Clinical trials offer our patients the opportunity to have access to cutting-edge, novel therapeutic agents as part of their treatment program,” Leguizamo said in a statement.

“It’s very exciting to offer the latest clinical trials here in Cumming.”

Added Fernando, also in a statement: “Very few community practices have the capability to offer clinical trials as an option. We want our patients to get the best treatment science can offer close to home, be it conventional therapy or experimental therapy.”

The Cumming GCS office is in the 1505 Building, Suite 4300, on the campus of Northside Hospital-Forsyth.

According to information from the hospital, the Northside Hospital Cancer Institute is a regional and national leader in the treatment of cancer, which diagnoses and treats more cancer cases and offers more cancer therapies than any other care provider in the Southeast.
