CUMMING — A 62-year-old man who drove off in a new pickup truck after providing a Cumming car dealership with fake identification was arrested Thursday afternoon following a short chase.

The man, who authorities later identified as Louis Lester Blanton, was reportedly test driving a brand-new Ford F-150 from Billy Howell Ford on Hwy. 9 about 2:15 p.m.

However, he was able to enjoy the vehicle for only a few minutes before dealership staff determined the license he had provided was fake.

“Of course, they didn’t realize it was fake until they let him drive away,” said Doug Rainwater, spokesman for the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

By the time Blanton stopped for the traffic light at Hwys. 9 and 20, not quite two miles later, sheriff’s deputies had been alerted.

“They attempted to stop the truck, but the driver fled,” Rainwater said. “The chase took place briefly, but we were able to get some more deputies into the area and we boxed [him] in on Atlanta Hwy. at Buford Dam Road.”

There was no damage to the truck or any of the patrol cars.

Blanton, whose address is unknown, was evaluated at a hospital before being taken to the Forsyth County Detention Center, where he remained Friday. Bond has been set at $15,070, according to the sheriff’s office.

Blanton faces several charges, including fleeing and attempting to elude, theft by taking, obstruction and reckless driving in connection with the nearly 3-mile test drive.
