County finalizes deal for softball tourneys

POSTED: February 7, 2014 12:04 a.m.

CUMMING -- Forsyth will be home to a gold-level softball tournament beginning this summer, following a vote Tuesday by county commissioners to approve a deal with Triple Crown Sports.

The weeklong event likely will draw as many as 150 softball teams from across the nation to compete on county-owned fields.

Signing the contract is “huge” for the community, said Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO James McCoy.

“It will be the largest amateur sporting event we’ve ever hosted as a community,” he said. “An event of that magnitude is really substantial and will have an incredibly positive impact on our community.”

The five-year contract sets a rate of about $225 per field. Estimates are that about 23 fields would be used for a tournament.

In addition, Triple Crown Sports would pay for and provide any improvements, including additional fencing, the company would need to hold tournaments.

It’s estimated the county could receive as much as $31,000 for the events, with an overall local economic impact of up to $2 million.

This year’s tournament — the USA Nationals gold level tournament for girls' age divisions 14, 16 and 18 — will be held July 14-17.

In years the county didn't play host to the national games, it would still be the site of a regional tournament.
