Regional career expo scheduled Tuesday

POSTED: February 21, 2014 5:04 p.m.

CUMMING -- Those looking for work are invited to take part in a regional job fair next week.

Representatives of the Georgia Department of Labor, in partnership with Lanier Technical College and the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce, will present the Northeast Georgia Career Expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday.

About 90 employers are expected to fill the Lanier Technical College Forsyth Conference Center for the event, which Danette Smith with the Department of Labor said is geared primarily toward jobs in industrial and technical fields.

“The idea of having the expo was birthed for Forsyth County because so many employers were having difficulties filling technical positions,” Smith said.

“We wanted to make sure those employers had a venue to attend and have access to several hundred job seekers, some good potential applicants for their positions.”

Among the businesses signed up are those in areas such as manufacturing, banking, retail, health care, government, computer systems and education.

Job seekers from Forsyth and surrounding counties are encouraged to attend. No registration or fee is required, but Smith advised they should be well prepared.

Since many employers with whom job seekers may wish to speak will be present, she said they should plan to bring at least 20 to 30 copies of their resumes.

Job seekers should also come dressed just as they would for a one-on-one job interview.

“It is vital the public understands that when they walk into that job fair, they are technically interviewing with an employer,” Smith said. “Even if they only speak a few brief minutes with an employer and leave a resume … that employer is determining [whether] to bring them in for an extensive interview or go on to another candidate.”

Smith anticipates a good turnout.

“We are expecting several hundred people because we will be marketing in all of the surrounding counties as well,” she said.
