Mentor Me bowling fundraiser Saturday

POSTED: February 20, 2014 12:01 a.m.

CUMMING -- Mentor Me North Georgia will present its annual Bowl for Kids fundraiser at 10 a.m. and noon Saturday.

Sylvia Cardona, executive director, said the bowling event is open to anyone.

“We invite our neighbors from throughout Forsyth County to join us for this year’s Bowl for Kids,” she said.

“They can interact with our mentors and mentees and also have fun since that’s a big part of what mentoring is all about.”

The nonprofit works to provide one-on-one mentoring relationships between volunteer adults and children between ages 6 and 17.

Men are matched with boys and women with girls. The adults commit to spending time each week with their mentees.

“They share everyday activities such as sports and movies or going to the zoo, a museum or music events,” Cardona said. “But most importantly, they become friends.”

The Bowl for Kids events is one of the organization’s largest fundraisers of the year.

While the group receives funding from United Way of Forsyth County, it depends on private donations for 50 percent of its annual budget.

For a $25 donation, supporters Saturday will receive two hours of bowling, shoe rental and pizza lunch.

Cardona said each year Stars and Strikes owners allow the organization to use the facility at no charge.

“We want to be a good neighbor,” said owner Jack Conouse, noting that the event has a special place in his heart since he is a mentor for the organization.

“I feel like I’m helping a child, but mentoring has also had an effect on me. It has made me put life more in perspective.”

He encouraged anyone interested in learning more about the organization to attend the bowling event Saturday.

“There is no better way to have a positive impact on our community than becoming a mentor,” he said. “It can have a transforming impact for a lifetime.”
