West Forsyth at Archer

When, where: Tonight, 6:30 p.m., at Archer High School in Lawrenceville.

Records, seedings: West is 17-10 and the No. 4 seed from Region 6-AAAAAA; Archer is 25-3 and the No. 1 seed from Region 8.

What to know: This season has been the natural step for both teams.

After going 20-10 and reaching the second round of the state tournament last season, Archer returned plenty of experience and welcomed an influx of new talent to ascend to the top of the state rankings this season. Junior point guard Madison Newby led the returners after leading Gwinnett County in scoring last season with 18.5 points per game. Amber Skidgel, a 6-foot junior transfer from Hebron Christian, and Newby’s sister, 6-foot-2 freshman Autumn, led the newcomers.

West’s story this season has been much of the same. After going 9-17 and missing the state tournament last season, the Lady Wolverines set a record for wins in a season and reached the state playoffs. Sophomore center and Maryland verbal commit Jenna Staiti led the returners and captured Region 6-AAAAAA player of the year honors. Freshmen guards Abby Quincy and Cassie Gazza and sophomore Jane Ortlip led the newcomers.

What’s next: The winner plays the Mill Creek-Roswell winner.
