New traffic signal to ease left turns at Fowler

POSTED: February 24, 2014 12:05 a.m.

SOUTH FORSYTH — As part of a new design, the state Department of Transportation will be installing Forsyth County’s first four-section flashing yellow traffic signals Tuesday by Fowler Park.

The two signals will be placed at Hwy. 9 and Castleberry Road/Carolene Way, said DOT spokeswoman Teri Pope. Both will be on the highway, with one signal in each direction.

“It’s basically going to allow left turners to go on yellow,” Pope said. “It expedites the traffic flow and makes the intersections more efficient, because they will have more of an opportunity to go than except for just that once on the green.”

The red, yellow and green lights, will still be used for straight lanes, but Pope said the new flashing yellow signals will be the “new standard” for locations with a high left-turn volume, traffic backups and related accidents.

“Eventually all signals will be like this,” she said. “But as we’re upgrading signals or putting in new ones, we’re replacing them with these.”

The new signals are slated to be fully operational by 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to Pope.

“We just want folks to realize that it’s going to be there ... and also to be aware of other drivers,” she said. “There’s a learning curve and other drivers may not know what to do when they see it.”
