Forsyth government hailed for its report on finances

POSTED: March 1, 2014 4:00 p.m.

CUMMING — Forsyth County’s government has received recognition for a financial planning document.

For the 13th consecutive year, the county has received the certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada, or GFOA.

The recognition was presented to the county for its comprehensive annual financial report issued for fiscal year 2012.

The association is a nonprofit professional group serving some 17,500 government finance professionals throughout the nation.

County Manager Doug Derrer said in a statement that the report is an important part of Forsyth’s financial planning process.

“As a detailed report on the county’s financial status, the comprehensive annual financial report is a component of the collaborative effort that goes into developing the county government’s budget,” he said.

“Each year, citizens, elected officials, constitutional officers and county staff work together to prepare a financial plan that allows us to carry out the county’s mission and vision, while at the same time maintaining high standards of service to the community. I extend my appreciation and congratulations to everyone involved in this project.”

According to information from the county, the certificate of achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.

David Gruen, Forsyth’s finance director and chief financial officer, also received an award of financial reporting achievement as the individual primarily responsible for preparing the report.

In a statement, Gruen credited the entire finance department for the recognition.

“This award reflects Forsyth County government’s commitment to transparency in our financial operations and certainly would not have been possible without the professional work performed by all the department staff,” he said.

The document was judged by an impartial panel and is available for review on the finance department’s page at www.forsythco.com.
