Bowl for Kids strikes success

Fundraiser backs mentoring group

CUMMING -- Leaders of an annual bowling event that supports a Forsyth County children’s nonprofit are calling the recent fundraiser a success.

Mentor Me North Georgia, which matches children with caring adult mentors, held Bowl for Kids on Feb. 22 at Stars and Strikes Family Entertainment Center in Cumming.

Sylvia Cardona, executive director of the organization, said the event, which is Mentor Me North Georgia’s largest fundraiser of the year, raised more than $14,000 and drew some 100 participants.

Besides providing valuable financial support to the organization — which receives some funding from United Way of Forsyth County, but is dependent on private donations for 50 percent of its support — the event also was chance to showcase the mentor relationships, Cardona said.

“Bowl for Kids provides our supporters in the community an opportunity to meet and interact with some of our mentors and mentees,” she said. “They see how they relate to each other and watch them have fun and that’s part of what mentoring is all about.”

Cindy Salloum, chief accountability officer for Forsyth County Schools, is serving as the 2014 board chairwoman of Mentor Me. In her role with the school system, she sees children every day who could benefit from the program.

“Many students need caring adults to keep them on track to become productive adults and good citizens,” she said. “Mentor Me builds the kind of adult-child relationships that make a difference in the lives of children.”

She added that she appreciates everyone who supported Bowl for Kids.

“Mentoring contributes to brighter futures for children and a stronger community for everyone,” she said. “We encourage our neighbors to consider becoming mentors and help make that difference.”
