Arts alliance holding workshop on grants

POSTED: March 11, 2014 12:04 a.m.

CUMMING -- Arts groups hoping to receive grant money this year from the Forsyth County Arts Alliance are invited to attend a free workshop on the application process March 18 at the Post Road Library.

The alliance has awarded an average total of about $50,000 to various organizations every year since it formed in 2008.

Grant recipients will be announced in the summer, but letters of intent to apply must be submitted by April 25.

Linda Roberts-Betsch, president of the alliances’ board of directors, said the workshop helps to bring in new art projects to the community.

“We’re always wanting to entertain new concepts, so it would be great if people would attend our workshop, especially those who have never applied before,” she said, adding groups that have received grants in the past can also benefit.

“You can always get a different perspective. Sometimes the questions people ask at the workshop give you ideas that maybe you haven’t thought about before.”

The alliance was founded following the sale of the Sawnee Cultural Arts Center to the county.

The money from the sale was placed in an endowment. While that money hasn't been moved, the alliance uses the interest earned for the grants.

Past grant recipients have pursued all forms of art, including photography, theater, music, dance, “anything that enhances the ability of a lot of people in Forsyth County to see,” Roberts-Betsch said.

“Our main emphasis is we want to make sure that what we fund is something that’s open to a lot of people in the county,” she said.

Eleven projects were funded last year. Roberts-Betsch said she’s looking “forward to seeing the benefits these funds can provide again in 2014.”
