Barbecue fundraiser to boost foster family recruitment

Blues & Q set for March 22

FORSYTH COUNTY — A barbecue fundraiser will help support recruitment of new foster families in Forsyth County.

Forsyth County Community Connection is presenting its first Blues & Q fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. March 22 in The Collection on Peachtree Parkway.

Niki Colella, director of Community Connection, said the creation of a barbecue event came from one of the organization’s board members, Brian Lyman, who owns Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q restaurant at the south Forsyth shopping mall.

“We wanted to do something different and fun,” she said. “Brian … had been involved in a similar event before and came up with this idea.”

The Blues & Q event will feature a barbecue dinner, as well as a special bourbon bar, entertainment by Atlanta Blue Grass Allstars, a cornhole competition and raffle prizes.

Tickets are $80 each or $140 for two. Raffle tickets will be sold at the event for $10 each. All proceeds will go towards recruitment of new foster families, Colella said.

About a year ago, Community Connection started facilitating meetings with child care organizations such as the Department of Family and Children Services, Jesse’s House and the Bald Ridge Lodge.

“At that time, we had only about four foster families in Forsyth County,” she said. “This meant children were being placed outside of the county.”

That practice, she said, costs the county much more money than if sufficient foster families were available in Forsyth.

“Not to mention the toll it takes on the kids after being not only taken away from their families, but also having to attend new schools, make new friends, etc.,” she said. “The group felt we needed to address this issue and recruit more foster families.

“We also felt like we needed more efforts to keep our current foster families engaged.”

Organizers of the barbecue are hoping to raise $10,000 for those causes. Sponsorship opportunities are still available for businesses too. Those interested can contact Colella at (706) 844-6138.

Anyone wishing to buy tickets or learn more about the event can do so at the Blues & Q website, www.bluesandq.com.

Tickets will be available through the night of the event.

“We think it will be a fun evening full of all things ‘B,’ she said, ‘bluegrass, barbecue and bourbon.’”
