NORTH FORSYTH -- Authorities have released the name of the 52-year-old man who was shot and killed early Monday after he reportedly pulled a gun on Forsyth County Sheriff’s deputies.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is handling the case, identified the man as Kenny Roger Drake. He died at the scene.

Sheriff Duane Piper said deputies responded to a 911 call about 12:12 a.m. Monday at 7975 Nicholson Road in northwest Forsyth. They were met by a man who pulled out a firearm and threatened them, which prompted deputies to fire.

None of the three deputies were injured in the shooting, according to Piper. Their names have not been released. Per sheriff’s office policy, they have been placed on administrative leave with pay during the investigation.

The nature of the 911 call was not immediately clear, and authorities have not said whether anyone else was home at the time.

This was not Drake’s first encounter with law enforcement.

The sheriff’s office confirmed Tuesday that Drake was arrested in August 2012 for rear-ending a school bus while reportedly driving under the influence on Strickland Road, just south of Hwy. 9.

The bus was full of Midway Elementary students, none of whom were seriously injured.

Last April, he received a 24-month sentence in the case, with all but 10 days to be served on probation, for DUI-less safe and following too closely.

According to the negotiated plea deal, Drake also had to complete 100 hours of community service and had driver's license suspended.

In Monday’s incident, the GBI and sheriff’s office have declined to release additional details, citing the ongoing investigation.
