Forsyth News Now: Bomb Threat at Chase Bank

FORSYTH COUNTY — Authorities are investigating a bank robbery that reportedly occurred about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Chase Bank on Buford Highway (Hwy. 20) at Trammel Road.

According to Doug Rainwater, a spokesman for the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, investigators have been able to piece together what happened.

“It was bang, bang, bang,” he said. “[There was] a note, give me your money, I have this explosive device, the money was exchanged and he left.

“[Bank personnel] didn’t’ really have a chance to call us in the time between [when he got there and left].

According to Rainwater, the suspect pulled up to the main part of the drive through in a black, four-door 2012 or 2013 Hyundai Genesis.

“The note was in plain view,” he said. “[The teller] didn’t have to touch the package he put in with the note [demanding money].”

Rainwater said the teller then sent an undisclosed amount of money back out to the suspect, described only as a white man, who then drove away.

Investigators are interviewing witnesses to determine more about the man and the getaway vehicle.

A Georgia Bureau of Investigation bomb disposal unit detonated the package the suspect left behind.

The item was not a bomb, Rainwater said, though investigators haven’t determined exactly what items were used to make it look like one.

Bank personnel were evacuated to a nearby pharmacy during the investigation.

Buford Highway was closed for about 10 minutes after the incident, while Trammel did not reopen for about two hours.
