SOUTH FORSYTH — A South Forsyth High School teacher has been named one of 10 finalists for the 2015 Teacher of the Year award in Georgia.

Nick Crowder said he was chaperoning a school drama trip in New York when he learned the news.

“Just being nominated at South Forsyth, because we’re such an excellent school … was just amazing,” Crowder said.

“Then to win here at the county level was amazing and it’s just kept going. I’m very surprised and honored that people think enough of what I do.”

Crowder, an engineering and technology teacher at South, has built a stellar science, engineering and technology presence at the school.

The team often returns from state championships and competitions with many medals and awards for performance in technology, particularly in the area of robotics. He was the Forsyth County school system’s 2013 Teacher of the Year.

“I love it when I shut the door and just teach ... I’m in a fun world of storytelling and creativity and it’s what I love to do,” Crowder said. “The recognition has been so profound and it’s been really humbling.

“I’m on a very short list of wonderful educators. They’re all amazing teachers from all over the state of Georgia.”

During the next several weeks, a panel of judges will conduct video observations and interview each of the finalists, who will also give a speech later in the month at a luncheon.

The winner will be announced May 16 at the Georgia Teacher of the Year conference banquet.

In addition to competing for the National Teacher of the Year honor, Georgia’s representative will travel around the state and nation as an ambassador for the profession.

“We had a very impressive group of teachers make the top 10. I look forward to working with all of them to help continue the student achievement gains our schools are showing,” said State Superintendent John Barge in a statement.
