Lambert lacrosse takes down West, 16-5

Longhorn attack too much for Wolverines

POSTED: April 11, 2014 3:16 p.m.

Lambert’s boys’ lacrosse team was busy over spring break down in Jacksonville, Fla., where the Longhorns made some significant strides in the right direction.

The key for them, according to coach Rich Wehman, was to build on that momentum as the playoffs approached — and that’s exactly what they did on Thursday, trouncing West Forsyth 16-5 in a pivotal Region 6-AAAAAA contest.

“We had a very good spring break trip in Jacksonville, now that we’re in the stretch run our goal was to not only win but build on that week,” said Wehman. “We excelled in all fashions of the game, and that definitely continued [against West].”

Senior co-captain Sean Carruthers led Lambert with six points (3G, 3A). Fellow attacker Spencer Wilson had a strong game, as well, tallying four goals; Nick Shumate, Coleman Sturkey and Jake Stanford chipped in three points apiece.

Garrett Gomez, another senior captain, was strong in net, making eight saves and surrendering just one goal. He, along with many of the Longhorns’ veterans, rested in the second half in lieu of some of the program’s younger players.

Additionally, sophomore midfielder Trey Arnold helped Lambert dominate in terms of possession by winning 10 of 12 face offs.

“It was a great, well-balanced game for us,” Wehman added. “We definitely accomplished what we wanted to.”
