Boulder Dash to fill quarry Saturday

POSTED: April 25, 2014 12:04 a.m.

CUMMING — There’s still time to take part in a popular running event.

The fifth annual Boulder Dash 5K/10K begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at Northside Hospital-Forsyth and takes runners on a unique foot race through the Bluegrass Materials Company rock quarry.

The race is put on each year by the Forsyth Healthcare Alliance, a part of the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce, to raise funds for the Forsyth County Parks Foundation.

The foundation works to provide support to the county parks and recreation department in the areas of beautification, programs, projects and scholarships.

Jason Mock, a leader of the Healthcare Alliance, said he is expecting another good turnout.

“Right now we’re sitting at about 1,400 runners and walkers,” he said Wednesday. “But usually we have 100 or more people come up [Saturday] morning to register so we feel that we’ll be a 1,500-runner event at the end of the day.”

Those interested in taking part can also sign up from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today during packet pick-up at Lou Sobh Honda, 1105 Buford Drive.

“People can register [today] and we will actually give them a race number right then and there so they won’t have to come back Saturday morning to pick up their number,” Mock said.

Cost to register today is $30 and the price goes to $35 Saturday morning.

Mock said a 10K has been added to the event this year.

“We have over 100 runners already signed up for the 10K, so we’re excited about that new aspect,” Mock said.

When runners and walkers finish the races, they can also take part in the Spring Fling event, featuring music, food, kids’ activities and awards.

“Another difference this year is we’re actually going to finish among the Spring Fling,” Mock said. “We’re trying to make our vendors and our sponsors as happy as possible, and give the runners and walkers a great crowd to cheer them on as they cross the finish line.”
