Cumming resident assumes command of airlift squadron

CUMMING — Lieutenant Col. James P. Marren of Forsyth County has taken command of the 158th Airlift Squadron, a unit of the 165th Airlift Wing, Georgia Air National Guard. 

The Savannah-based Airlift Wing flies the venerable C-130H aircraft in which Marren is a pilot. 

Marren, as a traditional Guard officer, has held numerous positions within the wing. He has served during rotations in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan. 

As commander, he oversees the training and operations of the 99 personnel assigned to the 158th Airlift Squadron. 

The 165th has served on numerous rotations during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Marren is a graduate of Spring Hill College and received his commission through the Academy of Military Sciences in 1991. 

He has more than 3,000 flying hours with various aircraft including the C-130 H2 models. 

Marren lives in Cumming with his wife, Cara. He has one son.
