Fundraiser supports fight against ALS

Fiesta run set for Saturday

POSTED: May 1, 2014 12:02 a.m.

CUMMING -- Runners and walkers are invited to come out Saturday to fight ALS.

The Eighth Annual Fiesta 5K/15K Challenge will begin at 6:45 a.m. with registration at the Lanier Technical College Forsyth Conference Center, 3410 Ronald Reagan Blvd.

The 15K begins at 7:45 a.m. and 5K at 8:05 a.m. A fun run will also be held at 9 a.m.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Emory University ALC Center in Atlanta to help find a cure for ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a neuromuscular disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord.

The condition is universally fatal, taking away the ability to move, speak, swallow and ultimately breathe.

It can strike anyone without warning and the average life expectancy after diagnosis is two to five years.

Some 30,000 people in the United States — more than 500 in Georgia — are living with the condition.

Organizers of this year’s Fiesta Challenge expect more than 700 participants and a crowd of some 1,500 spectators.

A post-race party will feature refreshments and music.
