GAINESVILLE – The North Forsyth team of Cole Cloud and Ronnie Warsop brought a five-bass limit to the scale Saturday weighing 17 pounds, 13 ounces to win the 2014 Georgia State High School Fishing Championship on Lake Lanier.

The win was the second straight for the Raiders and advanced the team to the Southeastern sectionals in Chattanooga, Tennessee in September with a chance to qualify for the national championship.

"We used a jerkbait early in the morning to get things started, then switched to a Carolina rig to try and catch some bigger fish later in the day," Warsop said. "We ended up culling four different times, but we still weren’t sure if we had enough weight to win."

"We figured that we had around 15 pounds, but we didn’t know if that was going to be good enough," Cloud added. "We are very excited to be moving on to the conference championship."

North had four teams finish in the top 20. Branson Mark and Luke Slaton finished fourth (14-7), Jerret Paige and Payton Holbrooks finished 15th (11-3) while Chip Harper and Jesse Phillips finished 20th (9-15).

West Forsyth’s Matthew Jones and Eli Huggins finished third (15-11).

"We are really proud of not just cole and Ronnie but all the kids in the program," North head fishing coach Scott Beard said. "The kids put in a lot of time on the water and practice a lot."

"I am pleased with how hard our fishing program has worked this past year," North athletic director Nathan Turner said. "We hosted several qualifier tournaments and warm-up tournaments and had a wonderful turnout. Coach Beard does a great job getting our guys ready. This is a tribute to all the hard work by Coach Beard and the guys on the fishing team. I am very grateful to the FLW/SAF and the Gainesville Chamber of Commerce for hosting this event and making it such a successful day."
