CUMMING — Five Forsyth County high school seniors were among 13 students recently awarded scholarships by Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation.

Each of the students received a $4,000 scholarship to the college or university of his or her choice.

Each year, the Sawnee EMC Foundation awards the financial assistance through unclaimed funds, which are separate from the money the foundation distributes to charitable organizations each quarter.

Over the past nine years, the scholarship program has awarded $311,000 to 99 high school seniors within Sawnee’s seven-county area.

This year, the Forsyth students receiving scholarships were:

* Mia Austin, North Forsyth

* Ryan Carr, Forsyth Central

* Kaitlin Karschner, South Forsyth

* David Kim, Lambert

* Amanda Saulnier, Lambert

Blake House, Sawnee’s vice president of member services, said in a statement that it is “a privilege for the foundation to be able to assist these students in furthering their education.”

“The Foundation Youth Scholarship program is a shining example of what the foundation and Sawnee EMC are all about, a commitment to being a partner and friend in the communities we serve,” he said.

Other students from surrounding counties receiving scholarships were: Miranda Abe; Jason Bick; Lacey Brown; Riley Jenkins; Priscilla Kim; Lindsey LeQuier; Sathvik Namburar; and Cole Simmons.
