Authorities stress weekend safety

POSTED: May 23, 2014 12:02 a.m.

FORSYTH COUNTY — For many, the Memorial Day weekend festivities will begin tonight. And while the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office wants the community to have a fun time, safety is its primary concern.

“We see an increase of DUIs this weekend, but we’ll be ready. We’ll have plenty of people working,” said Doug Rainwater, spokesman for the agency. “We’ll have safety checkpoints all three days.”

With school letting out today for summer, Rainwater said resource officers will spend their weekend on bike patrol in parking lots, the greenway, parks and Lake Lanier.

“We’ll be all over the place,” Rainwater said. “And we’ll have our two boats on the water fully staffed and our patrol section will be fully staffed also.”

The office’s traffic units and DUI taskforce will also be out all weekend, Rainwater cautioned. In addition to drinking and driving, boating under the influence will not be tolerated.

“It’s going to be pretty, the sun is going to be out, but we encourage people, if you’re drinking alcohol, stay put,” he said.
