Cumming Aquatic Center set for summer

Daily schedule begins Monday

POSTED: May 25, 2014 12:06 a.m.

CUMMING — Get those beach towels and sunscreen ready, the Cumming Aquatic Center outdoor leisure pool opens daily beginning this weekend.

While the outdoor pool — with its kids’ splash-play area, lazy river and water slide — has been open weekends since the first of May, the pool enters its seven-day-a-week schedule starting Memorial Day.

Manager Carla Wilson said she’s expecting strong numbers throughout the holiday weekend.

“The weather looks like it’s going to cooperate, so I think we can expect a really good turnout,” she said.

The pool will be open for two swim sessions Monday-Saturday through Aug. 6. The first session is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the second is 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. On Sundays, just one session — 1 to 6 p.m. — is offered.

Cost for one swim session is $5 for adults ages 18 to 59, and $4 for ages 2 to 17 and seniors 60 and older.

According to Wilson, outdoor pool-goers will again have the option to pay admission at an outdoor ticket area, which was added last year.

“Having a separate place for customers visiting the outdoor leisure pool to enter and exit really reduced congestion in our busy front lobby area,” she said.

In addition, an outdoor concession stand was added last year.

“We received a lot of positive feedback about [it] … particularly how the prices were reasonable and we had a great selection of products,” Wilson said.

Among those offerings were pizza, sandwiches, chips, popcorn, ice cream, granola bars and fruit.

To keep everyone safe, Wilson said the facility takes on about 15 to 20 lifeguards for the summer season.

“This summer, we have about 60 lifeguards and instructors on staff,” she said. “During the [school] year, we have around 40 to 45.”

Wilson is looking forward to a strong summer, not only at the outdoor pool, but also through the facility’s many offerings.

“We have already booked a lot of parties this summer and our swim lesson attendance is up, so we certainly can expect the outdoor leisure pool attendance to increase as well, as long as the weather cooperates,” she said.
