Authorities report ‘productive’ holiday weekend

POSTED: May 28, 2014 12:04 a.m.

CUMMING — It was a busy Memorial Day weekend for the Forsyth County’s Sheriff’s Office, though residents were able to stay safe.

Doug Rainwater, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said there were no fatalities or major wrecks over the holiday span, though there were 16 arrests for driving under the influence.

“It was one of the most productive weekends we’ve had for a holiday weekend,” he said about the number of arrests.

“Usually on holiday weekends, people know that we’re out and about with safety checkpoints and plenty of deputies working. But this time, it didn’t seem to matter.”

Rainwater said in addition to alcohol arrests, deputies issued plenty of tickets for speeding and seatbelt violations among their 463 traffic stops. There were also some charges for marijuana and felony drug possession. In total, 65 people were arrested.

“A lot of tickets were also written on [Lake Lanier] ... mainly being in restricted areas on the lake,” Rainwater said.

The activity on the lake was likely due to the weather, he said.

“Last summer, it rained a lot and a lot of people were kept in their homes, but this weekend it was beautiful, not just on the lake, but all through Forsyth,” he said.

“It’s never been this busy before ... a lot of people were out and about and consequently a lot of people were doing things they shouldn’t, but we were there.”
