Runoff candidates to appear at new event

GOP women’s group holding kickoff June 22

NORTH FORSYTH — Family fun on a farm will merge with politics June 22 as the Republican Women of Forsyth County hold a Summer Runoff Kickoff.

The event, which is being held at Kinsey Family Farm in north Forsyth, will introduce residents to the candidates involved in four runoff elections next month.

Organization president Julie Tressler said she wanted to move away from the traditional debate/forum style and create an event that’s more fun for people to attend, while still getting to meet the candidates.

“This is nothing we’ve ever done before,” she said. “Our goal was to make these candidates accessible to the average voter. We know voters are sometimes afraid of politicians and won’t always come to a debate or a more formal event. This is just mingling with the candidates.

“We’ll give each candidate a few moments to speak, but for the most part it’s shaking hands and talking to voters.”

Tressler said the lineup includes the following or their representatives: Republican U.S. Senate candidates Jack Kingston and David Perdue; Georgia school superintendent hopefuls Richard Woods and Michael Buck; state Sen. Jack Murphy and challenger Michael Williams; and incumbent County Solicitor General Donna Gopaul and opponent William Finch.

The event is also geared toward families, which is why Tressler said there will be hot dogs, barbecue, snow cones, cotton candy, a bounce house and bluegrass music. She hopes at least 200 people attend.

“Voter turnout is going to be especially important in this runoff and a lot of people are still unsure who they are going to vote for and we wanted to give them one last opportunity to get their questions answered,” she said.
