University helping with summer meal program

POSTED: June 22, 2014 12:03 a.m.

CUMMING — The University of North Georgia is helping feed local children this summer.

As part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Summer Food Service Program, the college will be providing free meals to eligible children in Forsyth, Hall and Lumpkin counties. It’s the third year UNG, which has a campus in Cumming, has participated in the program.

Melissa Armstrong, the college’s associate program administrator for the program, said the Gainesville-based Georgia Mountain Food Bank has provided the food.

The effort targets students who receive free or reduced price lunches during the school year, but are left without a reliable food source over summer break.

It provides them with meals by reimbursing providers throughout the U.S. who feed children during the summer.

Children who are part of households that receive food stamps, benefits under the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families are automatically eligible.

Eligibility is limited to people 18 or younger. However, exceptions are made for those 22 or younger who have a mental or physical disability, as determined by an educational agency, and participate in a school program for the mentally or physically disabled.

The UNG free meals are available Monday-Friday through Aug. 1 at the following times and locations in Forsyth County:

* Parking lot at Saxony Place Apartments, 101-103 14th St., from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

* 105 Ridgeview Circle, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

* Meals by Grace, 537 Lake Center Parkway, Suite 549, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

* YMCA, 2210 Turner Road, from noon to 1:30 p.m.
