Lambert head baseball head coach Jamie Corr has departed for Florida SouthWestern State College, the school formerly known as Edison State College. Corr, 40, played for Edison State in 1993 and will be tasked with restarting its baseball program, which has been dormant for the last 17 years.

According to the News-Press in Fort Myers, Florida, Corr was one of three finalists for the position out of 368 applicants. The team is scheduled to return to action in the fall of 2015.

"When you have this caliber of coach, it’s just a matter of time until somebody recognizes that and tries to get him away," said Lambert athletic director Drew Ferrer. "It’s a great opportunity for him and I’m excited for him."

Prior to joining the Longhorns, Corr coached at South Forsyth for four years, where he led the War Eagles to a state runner-up finish in 2009, and for two years at Riverview High School in his native Florida. He also has experience in the college ranks, serving as an assistant at Augusta State University – which is now called Georgia Regents University – and Darton State College.

"For a long time he told me he’d eventually like to get back in the college game," Ferrer said. "As you start doing high school for so long and things are good and you’re in a good area, it’s hard to get out of that world. He had a good idea. It’s the time to do it."

Corr received some well-deserved national attention this season, as he led the Longhorns to a 36-2 record and their first state title, beating Milton in the Class AAAAAA championship series.

For that, Corr was named USA Today’s High School Coach of the Year, and the team was ranked No. 1 in the country by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and USA Today.

Corr, who has been in charge of Lambert baseball since its inception in 2010, has built the Longhorns into one of the country’s premier teams. In total, Lambert went 112-45 during Corr’s tenure and won two region titles.

"Jamie is an incredible leader," Ferrer added. "In the school and on the baseball field, everything, he’s done a lot of great things for our school. And obviously, the magnitude of what he did this year with that team and getting them to where they got, keeping them grounded and humbled, it really put our baseball program on the map nation-wide, not just in the state.

"I think he’s had a huge effect on kids’ lives, the community and I’m real proud and happy for him. He’ll be missed."

Corr’s departure also means Lambert has lost its softball coach in Corr’s wife, Dana, giving the Longhorns two major vacancies to fill for the upcoming school year.
