CROSS COUNTRY ROUNDUP: West Forsyth girls win Stage Races

A recap of Forsyth County cross country action from Saturday

North Forsyth at Pickens Preview

BOYS: finished 15th of 17 teams with an average time of 20:19. Freshman Anthony Verdirame finished 59th with a time of 19:37. Junior Kyle Murberger (20:06) and Ben Cochran (20:10) were the other top finishers for North.

GIRLS: Juniors Gigi Fulkerson and Nina Carter finished 26th and 27th, respectively, with times of 22:49 and 22:50. Freshman Stephanie Metzger (23:16) added another top-40 finish as the Raiders finished 9th of 16 teams with an average time of 23:33.

South Forsyth at NEGA

BOYS: The South boys placed three runners in the top 20 on the way to a team third-place finish at Athens Christian. Ryan Peppenhorst led the way in 13th place with a time of 17 minutes, 9 seconds. Reed Vaughn (19th, 17:43), Matt Patterson (20th, 17:45) and sophomore Trevor Kane (24th, 17:51) maintained a pack mentality for the War Eagles.

GIRLS: Savannah Carnahan (19:00), freshman Kaylee DuPont (19:18) and Milicent Bergey (20:53) finished first, second and 10th individually as the War Eagles were a close runner-up to Marist. All five Marist runners finished 21st or better as the War Eagles totaled 69 points. The War Eagles of South were just four points behind.

Lambert at Bob Blastow Early Bird Invitational

BOYS: The Longhorns placed four runners in the top 30, including third-place finisher Jonathan Schwind (16:03). Schwind finished less than two-tenths of a second behind Clarkston’s Abbas Abbkar. Byron Gogan (16:52), Tyler Fox (17:08) and Hank Grogan (17:14) rounded out the top-30 runners for Lambert. “I really was impressed with our guys team [Saturday] in the way we finished and pushed through that race. The heat was just unreal even at 10 o’clock in the morning,” Lambert girls coach Natalie Leonard said in an email.

GIRLS: Mae McKenna’s eighth-place finish helped the Lambert girls come in third (average time 22 minutes), behind Cambridge and Landmark Christian. McKenna ran the Clinton Farms course in Villa Rica in 20 minutes, 39 seconds. The rest of the Lady Longhorns finished within 20 seconds of one another—Elly Sherman (22:09, 19th place), Kaylee Stillwell (22:17, 21st), Julia Parks (22:26, 27th) and Amanda Thompson (22:29, 31st) rounded out the Lambert top five.

Forsyth Central at Bob Blastow Early Bird

BOYS: Central got strong performances from Austin Campbell (16:15, sixth place), Charlie Webb (16:35, 12th) and Max Warner (16:40, 14th) as the Bulldogs placed second with an average time of 16 minutes, 43 seconds. All five Bulldogs runners crossed the finish line within 58 seconds of each other. Will Hasse (16:54, 21st) and Cole Gizelbach (17:14, 27th) rounded out the Central top five.

GIRLS: Bonnie McKinnon finished in 20 minutes, 31 seconds, one spot ahead of Lambert’s McKenna. Central placed eighth out of 13 teams with an average time of 23:07 and a split between their first and fifth runners of more than five minutes. Ashley Malone (22:27, 29th place) and Alyssa Hooper (23:11, 43rd) were the Bulldogs’ other top finishers.

West Forsyth at Stage Races

BOYS: West started the season off at the two-mile (not 5K) Peachtree Ridge/Walton Stage Races in Duluth. Brian Skoglind ran the two miles in 10 minutes, 1 second for a third-place finish. John Green ran his stage in 10:14, Daniel Sexton completed the course in 10:41, and Will Harper finished not far behind in 10 minutes, 45 seconds. As a team, the Wolverines finished seventh out of 14 schools.

GIRLS: Liz Galarza and Julie Ericson helped West edge Brookwood for first place at the River Green course. Galarza ran two miles in 11 minutes, 49 seconds, good for second overall, while Ericson (12:05) placed seventh. Dara Niemi (12:35) was the third Wolverine to finish among the top 20 runners. Stephanie Shea (12:55), Amanda MacArthur (13:02) and Kim Gibson (13:03) made it an impressive six West runners in the top 30.
