CUMMING — A long-awaited retailer will be opening its doors this week.

Cumming Costco will hold a ribbon cutting at 7:30 a.m. Friday before officially opening up to the public.

Deann Vickers, warehouse manager, said there has been much excitement about the new location, which is situated at the end of Market Place Boulevard, near Ga. 400 at Exit 15.

“We have received the most warm and wonderful welcome from this entire community,” Vickers said as she oversaw last-minute stocking of items Monday.

“Everything is on track for Friday’s opening and our gas station should be open on Wednesday, a couple of days early.”

Vickers noted that the gas station is available only to membership cardholders. Those who aren’t yet members can sign up through opening day in tents set up at the front of the store.

She said she and a staff of about 180 are ready to greet customers.

“It’s not unusual to have somewhere in the neighborhood of 5,000 or more [membership] cardholders,” she said.

And since a membership is good for two people in one household, that can equate to “more than 10,000 to 12,000 actual people coming through the doors” on opening day.

“It will be all hands on deck Friday and all weekend,” she said of the staff, many of whom have transferred in from other area Costco locations.

“We hired right around 90 people from the local area and the rest are transfers from around Georgia and all around really,” she said. “Everybody is really excited to be here and since a lot of our employees … have been traveling to Alpharetta, Mall of Georgia, Cumberland Mall, wherever, they’ve been traveling and driving in some pretty hectic traffic, so they’re just delighted to be here.”

The 148,000-square-foot facility will provide all of the typical Costco trappings, such as fresh produce, meats, breads, frozen foods, clothing and furniture items.

There are also specialty sections such as optical, hearing and pharmacy departments, jewelry, tires, photography and electronics.

The store features an extensive wine section, with bottles ranging up to $700, a package store and a concession area where shoppers can take a break to enjoy ready-made items like pizza, hot dogs, sandwiches, salads and frozen yogurt.

During opening weekend, Vickers said the store will also have about 50 demonstrations and sample stations set up for customers to enjoy.

Those who buy a membership can also receive a $10 or $20 cash card back through the weekend.
