North Springs at Pinecrest Academy

When, where: Tonight, 7:30 p.m., at Pinecrest Academy in Cumming.

Records, rankings: North Springs is 0-1 and unranked in Class AAAAA; Pinecrest is 0-0 and unranked in Class A.

Series history: First meeting.

Last meeting: First meeting.

What to know: Pinecrest Academy has billed this game as a landmark for the program in its third year as a member of the Georgia High School Association. It will be the first time the Paladins have played a team from a classification higher than AAA.

North Springs is coming off its 10th straight loss dating back to last season and the 43rd loss in its last 44 games dating back to 2009. Last week, Israel Alexander returned the opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown, but the Spartans went on to lose 28-14 to Woodland-Henry with nine turnovers.

That bodes well for a Pinecrest defense that returns eight starters from a unit that held Wesleyan’s varsity to just 14 points in three quarters of the teams’ scrimmage two weeks ago. Sophomore quarterback Ryan McCarthy and the Pinecrest offense looked sharp in that game, leaving with a 21-14 lead and plenty of confidence for tonight’s season-opener.
