Carpenter leads West softball to 4-0 win over North

POSTED: August 28, 2014 10:34 p.m.

With junior pitcher Kelly Carpenter dealing Thursday night, West Forsyth didn’t need much help.

North Forsyth, however, gave them plenty. The Lady Raiders committed five errors in a 4-0 home loss to West. Only one of the four runs allowed by North’s Sara King and Amber Jones was earned. King worked four innings of one-hit ball and gave up two unearned runs. Jones pitched the final three innings, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned).

“We didn’t swing it as well as we’ve been swinging it, but it goes to show that if you just put enough balls in play, good things will happen,” West coach Justin Rickett said.

Carpenter shut North (5-6, 4-2 Region 6-AAAAAA) down over seven strong innings. She allowed three hits and no runs, striking out six and walking one. Ashley Barton was the only North batter to reach third base, but the Lady Raiders’ third baseman was stranded there.

“I thought it was the best we’ve pitched all season,” Rickett said. “Kelly was working ahead in the count and down in the zone — she’s been missing up and getting hit — so we’ve been working on keeping the ball low.”

The Lady Wolverines (5-3, 4-2) jumped on the board in the top of the first, and the inning was a sign of things to come. Shortstop Bailey Concatto reached on a throwing error, moved to third one batter later on a throwing error and scored on Kayla Hardy’s fielder’s choice.

West added single runs in the third and sixth innings. Paighton Roushey led off the third by reaching on a throwing error. Peyton Erb followed with what should have been an infield single, but a throw over North first baseman Bailey Rivers’s head and into right field allowed Roushey to race home all the way from first. In the sixth, Caitlin Parks led off with a single to left field, moved to second on a fielder’s choice and scampered home on Alana Frye’s single to right-center field.

Concatto (1-3, 2 R, SB) manufactured the final tally in the seventh with an infield single, a stolen base and a dash home on a North throwing error.

Carpenter worked around a leadoff single and a walk in the final frame to close out a comfortable region win.

“These inter-county games are tough because everybody knows everybody,” Rickett said. “It’s always a struggle no matter what happens. We made the plays tonight.”
