FORSYTH COUNTY -- Eight Forsyth County middle school students recently became part of a statewide program that contracts them to an academic promise of good behavior and attendance.

Forsyth County is one of 69 in the state to participate in the REACH Georgia scholarship program, where students and their parents sign a contract agreeing to keep at least a 2.5 GPA in core courses, have good behavior and attendance through the rest of middle and high school.

They must also attend program activities throughout the school year and commit to graduate from high school and attend college.

Once attending college, they will receive a “significant scholarship” through the program and community donors, with the “potential for matching from several Georgia universities,” according to Hannah Samples, a spokeswoman for the school system.

Teachers and counselors nominated eighth graders who have demonstrated academic promise. They were then asked to apply and provide three references before going through an interview process.

Each student and their parents — the third cohort from Forsyth — signed a contract at a ceremony on Tuesday that was attended by their families, principals, school district officials, elected officials and business and community leaders.

“The Cumming-Forsyth County community is supporting REACH scholars to ensure they are improving grades, attendance and behavior and are given college and career preparation. They are also providing a portion of the funds needed for this year’s REACH scholars,” Samples said. “The 2016-17 donors who contributed to make these scholarships possible for our eight students are The Bagwell Family Foundation, Cindy Jones Mills, Forte Data Systems Inc. and United Way.”
