FORSYTH COUNTY — Two Forsyth County firefighters recently took top honors in a statewide competition.

Firefighter Jon Lent and Lt. Paul McAfee both placed first in their age categories at the Toughest Firefighter Competition, which was held at the Carroll County Public Safety Training Facility.

Besides Lent and McAfee, Forsyth firefighters Les Leger, Jon McPherson and Steve Tabaka also competed at the event in west Georgia.

All five work together at the Station 1 in downtown Cumming.

Leger placed second in his age category, while Tabaka placed third in his during the event, which consists of five challenges.

All the challenges are completed while wearing full turnout gear and a self-contained breathing apparatus.

Participants are timed and ranked by age category as they complete a high-rise pack carry, hose hoist, forcible entry, hose advance and victim rescue.

In a statement, Fire Chief Danny Bowman praised the local firemen for their participation.

“Their hard work and achievements are the embodiment of the profession of a firefighter,” he said. “They are great examples of the kind of personnel employed” by the department.
