Annual dancing, casino night to benefit Sawnee Woman’s Club

POSTED: April 21, 2017 5:00 a.m.

For the 32nd year, the Sawnee Woman’s Club is inviting Forsyth County residents to don their dancing shoes at the club’s annual Nite in Olde Cumming fundraiser on Saturday.

The event, which is one of the county’s longest-running community fundraisers, will provide a dinner catered by Chef Kern’s, an opportunity for dancing and music from The Stephen Lee Band, casino tables and a silent auction at 6140 Events, located at 6140 Ga. 400 in north Forsyth, from 7-11 p.m.

“This is a special night for our club,” said Sharon Lee, co-president of the SWC. “It’s the only fundraiser we do, and it must provide funds for a whole year of service projects that benefit children, women and families in the Forsyth community.”

SWC is a service organization affiliated with the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), a nonprofit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.

“We’re so excited to have our friends and neighbors across Forsyth put on their favorite cocktail attire and all the while staying close to the community we serve,” she said. “This event is designed to be fun and light-hearted, but we’re very serious about the service work we do, so this is a fine opportunity for people who aren’t familiar with the club to learn about the charities we support and the issues that are important to us.”

Planning committee member Lisa LaFayette said the fundraiser is also an opportunity for prospective members to get an idea of what SWC does.

“This is a fun, relaxed party, so prospective members have a low-key opportunity to socialize with current members to learn about the work we do in fine arts, education, environmental conservation, family stability and home life, public affairs and even how we support deployed military troops through international outreach,” she said.

According to SWC’s website, GFWC is the oldest non-denominational, non-partisan, international service organization of volunteer women in the world, boasting 10 million members in more than 20 countries, with 6,000 clubs in the U.S.

SWC has provided nearly 100,000 volunteer service hours and about $500,000 in support of local charities since 1985, which membership Chairwoman Lois Watts said is one of the reasons Nite in Olde is such an important event for the club.

The event costs $90. Event tickets can be bought online at or in-person from any club member.
