South Forsyth High School athletic director Keith Gravitt announced the hires of new wrestling and swim coaches.

Corinna Spurlock, a counselor at the school, will take over South’s swimming program. Mike Beckley, an assistant wrestling coach and business technology teacher at South, moves up to lead the varsity for the second time.

Spurlock, a University of Georgia graduate, swam competitively for Swim Atlanta and for North Gwinnett High School. She has coached swimming for nine years, most recently as the head coach of the Suwanee-based Maple Ridge Manta Rays. This will be her first time coaching high school swimming.

"I’m excited to take over the program," Spurlock said. "I want them to love swimming as much as I do. My mom was a swim coach, so I’ve been learning how to coach technique for years."

Spurlock said she plans on making South’s swim program more accessible and friendly to non-year-round swimmers who want to participate in high school competition.

Mike Beckley has taught business and technology for 28 years in Gwinnett, Fulton and Forsyth counties and is the former head wrestling coach at Norcross and North Springs. He replaces Danny Sinnott, who coached for nine years at Peachtree Ridge before moving to South Forsyth in 2012. South’s wrestling program sent five individual wrestlers to the state meet during Sinnott’s tenure and finished second in last season’s Forsyth County meet. Sinnott is headed back to Gwinnett County to lead Collins Hill, which has won seven state titles under the traditional format and five dual-meet state championships.

Beckley led the South wrestling program in the early 2000s before stepping away from the mat, only to return in a volunteer capacity when Sinnott needed assistant coaches.

"I’m looking forward to getting back on the mat and to continue to build what we’ve started here," Beckley said. "Our sights are set on winning our region and the county, just as they were last year."

South returns 10 of 14 starters from last year’s team that finished third in Region 6-AAAAAA.
