Soccer: South Forsyth sweeps North Forsyth in sloppy conditions

POSTED: March 8, 2017 1:41 p.m.

South Forsyth and North Forsyth’s soccer teams faced off on a very wet Tuesday night in Raider Valley. South prevailed in the torrential downpour by the scores of 4-0 and 2-0.

It was a South shot fest, as the War Eagles girls and boys combined for 43 shots, 28 of which were on goal.

For the girls, Jenna Vollrath led the way with two goals on just four shots, one of which came off a beautiful center from Lauren Kelly in just the first two minutes of the match.

North’s two keepers were busy all match. Katherine Fisher and Savannah Cummings combined for 13 saves.

“We knew they were good and had good keepers, we were fortunate to put some in the back,” South head coach Tom Braun said. “But with that being said we need more of our shots to be better located.”

The fantastic goalkeeping for North also extended to the boys game where sophomore Braden Davison had seven saves despite the Raiders’ 2-0 loss.

Davison was playing shutout ball even as South dominated possession on the Raiders’ side of midfield.

But in the 72nd minute, Lorenzo Betti dribbled past Davison for South’s first goal. Two minutes later, Trey Tanjuatco scored to extend the lead to 2-0.

“I’m proud of the fact we were able to produce on offense even in this sloppy weather,” Braun said.

South’s wins set up big matches Friday against Milton. Both the girls (8-0-0, 4-0) and boys (6-2-0, 4-0) sit atop the Region 5-7A standings just a game ahead of the Eagles and Lambert.
