Farmers market thriving in Vickery

Draws vendors from across state

POSTED: June 19, 2014 12:03 a.m.

SOUTH FORSYTH — A range of fresh produce, meats, cheeses and other goodies are available through the Vickery Village Farmers Market.

Leah Shelley, who began the market last summer with husband, Kim, said the market is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Friday in the parking lot in front of the Forsyth County Family YMCA.

The Shelleys, who split their time between Forsyth County and their farm, Seven Growers, with sites in south Georgia and lower Alabama, wanted to bring another shopping option to area residents.

“Right now, our main customer base comes from Vickery and the Polo Fields [communities], but we would love to have people from all over the county,” Shelley said.

Unlike some other farmers markets, Vickery is open to vendors from throughout the state. “If all of them show up, we have around 40 different [ones],” she said.

The products range from Forsyth County-grown vegetables and meats to artisan breads and cheeses. There are also items such as honey, homemade soaps, almond and cashew butter, sprouts, salsa and jams.

“We even have two vendors who bring in seafood from coastal Georgia,” she said. “That’s been very popular. One of the vendors does shrimp and fish, and the other one does lobster and other types of shellfish.”

Shelley said the Vickery market will run through Nov. 7.

But Forsyth residents looking for similar products will have a chance to buy them year-round soon after she and her husband open a retail site called the Farmers Produce Market and Country Store on Ga. 400 in north Forsyth.

“We hope to have the store location open soon,” she said. “It will open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.”

Shelley is hoping for a similar response to the store as the Vickery market has received the past two years.

“Everybody just loves it,” she said of the farmers market. “All of the feedback we’ve gotten has been overwhelmingly positive. We’ve got a great response from everybody, the customers and the vendors.

“Everyone is so grateful and appreciative … people really look forward to it every week.”
