CUMMING — The Forsyth County commission chose a local firm to provide most of the furnishings and office supplies for the new courthouse and detention center in downtown Cumming.

The vote to accept DeKalb Office Supplies’ bid of $1.4 million passed 5-0 during a meeting Thursday night.

The commission had been slated to award the bid during an Aug. 12 work session. During that meeting, procurement director Donna Kukarola recommended the bid be awarded to Gwinnett County-based Office Creations, after noting that just four companies had responded from among the 11 bids submitted.

However, commissioners chose to move the item to Thursday’s regular meeting to reconsider the possibility of awarding the contract to the next-lowest bidder, DeKalb Office Supplies, since that business is located in Forsyth.

On Thursday, Kukarola said she removed a portion of the request that was for high-density filing systems, which will be rebid separately.

Removing that item, brought DeKalb Office’s bid down to $1.4 million, lower than that of Office Creations’ $1.8 million.

She said rebidding the filing system may also save the county as much as $100,000, since direct manufacturers of that product could be included in the bidding process.
