Local man is among 17 indicted in drug ring

POSTED: May 31, 2014 1:23 a.m.

ATLANTA — Federal prosecutors say 17 members of a Mexico-based drug ring, including one who lives in Cumming, have been indicted on drug distribution and conspiracy charges.

Authorities say the suspects were distributing methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine in Georgia and Florida.

According to prosecutors, a Mexico-based drug dealer conspired with his brother and his associates to import large amounts of drugs into the metro Atlanta area.

Prosecutors say the suspects used passenger buses to smuggle the drugs into the area.

Authorities say 644 pounds of meth, 37 kilograms of heroin, 27 kilograms of cocaine and $680,000 in drug proceeds were seized from suspects in the drug distribution ring.

Twelve of the 17 suspects indicted are in custody, while authorities continue to search for five others, including Reynaldo Maldonado-Guipes, 56, of Cumming.

The other suspects hail from across the metro Atlanta area, including Alpharetta and Cobb and Gwinnett counties.
