Lake season brings need for caution

Lake Lanier is a thing of unquestioned beauty, especially now that a rainy spring has brought water levels back where they belong. For those of us used to living near its shores it is a tourist attraction and economic engine that we sometimes take for granted. And as a source of water it is absolutely vital to metro Atlanta and the state. Sometimes the lake is such a familiar part of our surroundings that we ... Read More

Congratulations to the graduates

For a week now many of the pages of the Forsyth County News have had a common theme: high school graduation. On multiple occasions over the past week, students from schools large and small, public and private, walked across stages to retrieve a diploma that represents both the end of one chapter of life and the beginning of another. Gov. Nathan Deal last week signed legislation passed in the most recent session of the state’s General Assembly aimed at restricting access of illegal immigrants to certain state services, while at the same time tweaking a broader immigration law approved last year to eliminate some undue burdens it created. Bridge project on Hwy. 20 long overdue

At long last, it looks like the state Department of Transportation is ready to address the traffic nightmare created by the two-lane Hwy. 20 bridge crossing the Chattahoochee River and connecting Forsyth and Gwinnett counties. State officials said last week the planned construction of parallel bridges to replace the current structure could begin as soon as this summer, with completion expected by May 31, 2016. As irritating as it almost certainly will be to face ... Read More
