GAINESVILLE — A 5-year-old riding his scooter was struck by an oncoming vehicle Tuesday and later died, according to Gainesville police.

Police responded to a 911 call about 7 p.m. Tuesday at The Retreat at McEver apartment complex on McEver Road regarding a child struck by a vehicle.

A 5-year-old boy had been riding his scooter in the parking lot, said Gainesville Police Cpl. Kevin Holbrook.

“The initial investigation has revealed the child darted out between vehicles and was then struck by the oncoming car,” Holbrook wrote in an email.

The child was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center and later died.
