Boulder Dash, spring fling set for Saturday at Cumming quarry

CUMMING — A different kind of rumbling will be coming from a local quarry Saturday as the Cumming-Forsyth Chamber of Commerce holds the sixth annual Boulder Dash.

The fundraiser features a 10K, which starts at 9 a.m., and a 5K a short time later, both of which pass through the Bluegrass Materials Quarry on Ronald Reagan Boulevard. There’s also a family fun festival.

“The runners will head south on Ronald Reagan [Boulevard] toward the quarry and turn into the quarry and wind their way back into the Bluegrass quarry and see the pit and all the rock berms and the conveyor belts and all the machinery that the quarry has to offer,” said Jason Mock with the chamber.

Mock described the race as unique, in that it goes through an active quarry, but that organizers had taken every precaution.

“It is an active quarry. Bluegrass will actually shut down the plant on Friday afternoon and start cleaning up the plant, compacting the road and smoothing the road out back in the back where the runners do run,” he said.

“They really get to see something that the majority of the citizens of Forsyth County do not get to see, and that’s back in the back end of the quarry.”

Following the race will be the Bluegrass Spring Fling, which features something for participants and families alike.

“All in all, it’s going to be a great opportunity for runners and walkers to see the quarry,” Mock said. “... We have over 20 vendors and sponsors that will be out there showcasing their business and their products to all the runners and walkers.

“There will be food and water and a jumpy for the kids and a DJ out there with music, so it’s going to be a great time for all.”

Money raised during the race will go toward the Forsyth County Parks Foundation, which helps support local amenities.

“That money has been used [over the years] in different aspects by the parks foundation, for different things from the [Big Creek] Greenway to the sidewalks to and other things to help their foundation.”

Online registration for the race is closed, but those wanting to participate can still sign up today at Lou Sobh Honda on Hwy. 20, or prior to the race on Saturday.

“We’ll be [at Honda] from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., handing out all the race packets for all the runners who have preregistered,” Mock said. “But if you haven’t registered and would like to get a race number, come out.

“If you can’t make it out on Friday, you still have time to register Saturday morning from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at Northside-Forsyth Hospital.”
