Gravity-defying canines will compete for top-dog titles once again during the annual Rucker Jump Into Summer.

The Dixie DockDogs event begins at 11 this morning and runs through Sunday in the parking lot of Rucker Pet & Wild Bird on Castleberry Road.

Teams of dogs and their handlers can compete in the three categories — including big air, extreme vertical and speed retrieve — in a 26,000-gallon pool.

Big air, the most popular of the three, features dogs jumping into the pool after a toy for the longest distance leap.

The DockDogs spring event first took place in Forsyth County in 2011. It has since grown in popularity, with the north Georgia club adding a fall event at the other Rucker location last year.

Store co-owner Cindy Rucker said the business became interested in offering the events after hearing from several customers who compete in the dog sport.

Besides adding a second annual event, the Keith Bridge Road store features a permanent practice pool for dogs to dock dive or just swim with their favorite people, Rucker said.

“It’s been pretty popular,” she said. “It’s all kinds of dogs that do it, which is the fun part of it.”

Dogs are entered into a class based on their ability to jump, so a small dog won’t be competing against a large one.

The event is open to anyone to compete or to enjoy the show as a spectator.
